Walgett Shire Telemetry
Walgett Shire Council is responsible for Water and Sewerage Assets covering Walgett, Lightning Ridge, Colleranenbri and Rowena . Rad-tel won the contract to provide Telemetry and SCADA for the Shire Area.
Objective
The objective of the contract is to provide a real-time monitoring and control system for all Walgett, Carinda, Lightning Ridge, Colleranenbri and Rowena Water and Sewerage assets with the intention to provide early warning of potential environmental problems along with maintaining historical data and providing relevant information to operations staff.
Equipment Used
- 8000 Series RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) equipment
- TAIT TB7100 Rack Mounted Link Coupled Repeaters at Lightning Ridge and Walgett capable of 19.2k data speeds.
- Omron CJ Series PLC Equipment for local control of Sewerage Pumping Stations, Water Pumping Stations and Treatment Plants.
- GME Electrophone TX3800 Data Radio Equipment at the Outstations
- Various custom build Stainless and Painted Steel Enclosures and Antenna Equipment
- RAD-TEL SCADA 2007 with Datalayer extensions at Walgett and Lightning Ridge
- RAD-TEL Historian 2007
Methodology
- Design of Network including comprehensive Radio Network design and Radio Survey

- Design of SCADA and PLC functionality including PLC programs for Sewerage Pumping Stations, Water Pumping Stations, Plants and Reservoir Sites.
- Installation and Commissioning of a TAIT TB7100 High Speed Data Network for communications between Lightning Ridge, Carinda, Walgett, Colleranenbri and Rowena. This includes Battery Backup and IMARK 5020RM Power Supply equipment.
- Installation of Master Server and FEP (Front End Processor) equipment including UPS backups, auto diallers and after hours SMS messaging.
- Cutover of Sewerage and Water assets and decommissioning of existing landline facilities.
- Complete Commissioning of system and Operator Training
Result
The Walgett Shire Telemetry installation is continuing with control cutover and initial Operator Training due to be completed before Christmas 2007. Full Operation and Maintenance Training will occur in early 2008.
